CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

The next night, Roz, Duke, and Jackie got out of Roz’s Mercedes at the auditorium of the private school the twins attended. Nikki, their driver, got out too.

But Jackie was so nervous that Roz and Duke were both holding her hands.

“Stop worrying, sis,” Duke said, squeezing her hand. “You’ve done this before. You’re always the best one.”

But Jackie was just nervous and no pep talk from her twin brother was going to change that fact for her. She believed in facing fears. She was being real with hers: she didn’t like performing in front of crowds. Period. “I’ve got to go backstage and get ready with the rest of the group.”

Roz pulled her against her and kissed her on the forehead. “Do your best,” she said, and that was all she said because she knew her daughter. And Jackie left their side and headed to the entrance doors where security allowed her in. But the general public, which were mainly family members of those performing, were not allowed entrance until 8. It was seven forty-nine.

“You should have encouraged her more, Ma,” said Duke. “She’ll listen to you.”

“She listens to me because I don’t lie to her,” Roz said. “What telling her not to be nervous is going to do? She’s nervous. That’s the reality. She’s got to figure out how to deal with that on her own.”

Duke looked at Nikki and shook his head. “Ma is one tough broad,” he said, and Nikki laughed.

And they waited, like the other families and friends, for the doors to open.

But just before opening, at seven-fifty-eight, that big black Escalade they knew so well came driving up. Mick was the driver and Freddy, his capo and bodyguard, was seated on the passenger seat.

When Duke and Nikki saw the big Cadillac, Duke elbowed Nikki. But when Roz saw it, she was floored.

Jackie had performed in six different recitals since she and Duke started attending their private school, and Mick never had time to attend a single one. Roz cussed him out every time. But even then he wouldn’t make any promises about attending the next one. But he was here this time? Why now all of a sudden? Because she left his ass? She was pleased for Jackie that he was there at all, but she didn’t like that it took her kicking him out of the house for him to show up.

When Mick got out of the SUV, he buttoned his suitcoat but he also looked around to make sure his family had the heightened security he had ordered. He saw one of his men to the east of the building and one of his men to the west. There was a car with a ready-to-chase security detail north of the building, and another chase car was supposed to be around back facing south. And Nikki was blanketing Roz and Duke.

Satisfied that his family had been well protected, Mick and Freddy made their way up the steps to the family.

When Duke saw his father walk up those steps, he couldn’t keep it in any longer.
